New Hours-of-Service Regulations To Combat Driver Fatigue

Published:

The latest FMCSA regulations for Hours of Service went into effect on July 1st, 2013. These regulations outlined new requirements that Drivers must meet for maximum driving times during a given period and the minimum break and rest time in between driving periods. The regulations have been implemented to improve Driver safety and combat Driver fatigue, one of the leading causes of accidents for commercial vehicles.

Important changes have been implemented with the new regulations, such as a lower maximum average workweek. The maximum average workweek has decreased dramatically, from 82 hours to 70 hours. In addition, the regulations now require that Drivers take a 30-minute break during the first eight hours of a shift.

Since February of 2012, there have been five regulation changes from the FMCSA concerning Hours-Of-Service. With on-going changes in FMCSA regulations, Drivers can have a difficult time knowing what the most current regulations require. Continually changing regulations are another reason why an Electronic Logging Device (ELD) such as VDO RoadLog is of greater benefit to the Driver than a paper log. RoadLog is able to calculate the Driver’s availability based on the latest rules and automatically alert Drivers of any upcoming limits that they are about to exceed. These alerts can help Drivers avoid fines, and stay in compliance, protecting their CSA scores so they qualify for the most profitable loads. RoadLog fully automates HOS tracking and eliminates the need to use a calculator to stay in compliance.

HOS regulations will continue to evolve, but VDO RoadLog is designed to keep Drivers in compliance regardless of the changes. VDO RoadLog ELD software is continually updated to maintain compliance with the most current regulations, including FMCSA rules for HOS, Alaska and Oilfield Operation, International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA), International Registration Plan (IRP) and Canadian HOS.
