Issues with Bluetooth ELDs

As truckers experience issues with cell phone Bluetooth connections, many move to dedicated ELDs. recently conducted a poll asking drivers about “the most prevalent issues owner-operators are experiencing with ELDs.” The most common problem reported? “Breaks in wireless connection between handheld / ECM plugin.”

An incredible 23% of owner-operators indicated that they’re experiencing breaks in the wireless connection between the ECM plugin and their ELD. This is a problem that only effects ELDs that do not have a hard-wired connection between the ELD and the diagnostic port.

Most Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) ELDs use apps running on cell phones or tablets to maintain compliance. They connect to the diagnostic port via Bluetooth wireless. As most consumers know from experience with computer mice, wireless speakers, and headsets, Bluetooth connection can easily be dropped. It’s not a big issue if you have to reconnect your computer’s mouse, but if your ELD bluetooth connection is lost it can result in gaps in your logs. And that exposes drivers to fines and / or delays at inspection stops.

VDO RoadLog ELDs use a hardwired connection to the data port / ECM to ensure there are no drops in data recording. 12 different cables are available for connecting RoadLog ELDs. In addition to cables for all current popular data ports, a cable kit is available for connecting to the OBD II ports found on light-duty vehicles. There is also an ‘open wire’ cable that allows connection to older vehicles that have no data port.
