Why CSA scoring will have Fleets looking for independents with ELD-equipped vehicles

Published:

While the start date for ELD compliance has not yet arrived, some carriers are already looking to hire independents who are ELD equipped.

Why? The carriers know that the safety and compliance of the Drivers they hire will effect their CSA scores and, in turn, the company’s insurance costs.

Drivers who are using ELDs can provide clear, objective proof that they are operating in compliance. Companies that can prove that their Drivers are operating in compliance may get more favorable insurance rates. That gives them a real business advantage in our highly competitive business.

Already, FMCSA Regulation 395.15 states “A motor carrier may require a driver to use an automatic on-board recording device to record the driver’s hours of service in lieu of complying with the requirements of 395.8 [traditional paper log].”

Some Drivers and companies are adopting ELDs now, to save on hours of manual paper work and compliance record keeping. However, it’s not at all difficult to see that, in the near future, independents who want the best loads from preferred carriers will need to be ELD equipped to qualify.
